Still Making Waves Creating a Splash in Midlife & Beyond
by Gracie Malone
Still Making Waves was born out of Gracie's
moments of self-reflection on her sixtieth birthday--the day she spotted a particular birthday card in the rack in her favorite gift store. She writes "the card
pictured four women in bright, colorful bathing suits, their bodies in various stages of droop. They stood holding hands, facing the waves with their toes in the sand,
ready to take a plunge into the cool waters of the deep blue sea." Gracie giggled as she headed to the cash register to purchase the card. She says, "It was
a 'birthday present from me to me!'"
Even though the card was a real hoot it
tugged at Gracie's heart with a deeper message: "I want to be one of those women holding hands with others, finding courage and support and having fun as we face
an ocean full of challenges. I want to stand with sisters, toes in the sand, drawing strength from each other and from God. And because I have drifted into a few
turbulent seas in life and from time to time waded into some rather deep waters of my own. I want to be one of those women to you--to come alongside and say
"C'mon, let's face the waves of life together."
In Still Making Waves, Gracie encourages
women not to "grow old gracefully" or "go gentle into that good night" but to go out like a firecracker wearing scarlet and purple. She also
challenges women to spend the second half of life making a difference in our world--serving others and God with joy and a touch of wonder.
